Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share comparison images, injection guides and assertions of next-day British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for transactions.

Preliminary studies suggest it could assist patients lose up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting products of unknown origin.

Some experts stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Selling retatrutide on social media or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that must not be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Several content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Response and Content Elimination

According to the social media company, the platform has removed violative content and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The organization said it was committed to maintaining the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Activities

Research also discovered groups with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with numerous of users, filled with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step instructions for preparing or administering at home.

Within moments of entering one community, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions take place. The seller sent an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed testing documentation. None asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Product Information and Costs

Inside these groups, posts show dark colored packages with postal service labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between powder vials, mixed at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens usually priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Security Actions

A representative for the messaging service said it actively moderated dangerous content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Warnings

“People are administering materials they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind this drug is valid, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to recent price rises for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she said.

Her team has previously seen individuals injured by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to possibly significant medical dangers”.
